Blackout Bakes

In 10minutes my cake should have been ready. Then all of the sudden, the lights went out. We thought it was just our home. A peek out the window not long afterwards affirmed that the entire area was affected.

Nissa was in the kitchen - going back and forth to the oven, checking anxiously on the cake. She's so hyper these days and her occasional sugar crave can drive me up the wall at times. Nak Cool Blog lah, nak Slurpee lah. Tonite she asked me to bake a cake.

When the lights suddenly went off, she jumped like a grasshopper around the kitchen, shrieking as if she saw ghost. Ingatkan kenapa je budak ni terlompat-lompat macam makan belacan! Ohhh rupa-rupanya ada orang ketakutan...cheh badan je besar!

Facebook-ing in the dark....bad, bad for the eyes!!

Anyway, power only came back after about 45mins of sweating in the dark. And my cake?? Would it survive?

Well, it did!! When power came back, I added another 10mins to the baking time. And the cake turned out great.

I was lucky, that's for sure :)

Walk With a Cause

It was my first walk this year. My busy schedule did not permit me to participate in the KL Marathon held earlier. Plus I didn't have much confidence that these knees would hold up to the stress from the run.

So the closest adrenaline rush to a marathon was this charity run by Avon Malaysia.

When I signed up for the "Kiss Goodbye to Breast Cancer" Run sometime last July, I thought I was gonna be walking all by myself. Promoted the event on FB but there didn't seem to be many takers. It being held on a Sunday, I guess people had plans already made. Anyway much to my delight, that 1 later multipled to 5; my sister and her two daughters had signed up too and I managed to drag Nissa to come along.

This auntie all set...all charged to go. Like 2 weeks before the run, I walked almost every morning. Some days I did 4km, some days I only managed 3....

.
.
Nissa and Aliah doing jump warm ups

.
The Kinrara Gang - my sis and her two girls (and they were very competitive one lorrr...nak finish top 50 and they did of coz)

.
Crowd starting to build up (and while waiting to the celebs and VIPs we had to tolerate 3 rounds of zumba!! Katanya for warming up...yeah, but like THREE rounds??? In such a limited space to be shaking, shaking away?? Helloooo...organizers, pls be practical next time yar)

.
Can't wait to start dah ni....

Let's walk everyone!

.
Ehhh ehhh....check out who was in the crowd too ;)

Mommy and Nissa@2km mark

Nearing the 2.5km turn

Some were on roller blades

Pink sash...the BC survivors

Enter the Stress Free Zone...laugh, smile, no worries...just be happy

At the finish line...yesss...WE did it!! It was all fun last Sunday. The mood was not at all competitive; lots of smiling faces....cheering and picture taking for social media updates.

Vicious Attack

Mosquitoes - who would imagine such pesky nemeses could cause great havoc in our family this last one week or so. What started with intense headaches, feverish spells, severe joint and muscle pain and exhaustion later led to one most unbelievable finding - dengue!!

Hero #1
Faris was the first casualty. That Sunday night when he picked me up at the airport, he complained of the bout of headaches he's been having over the weekend. Next day it got worst and he went to the GP to have it checked. At the clinic, they did a blood test. Later that evening, his blood test results came back and it was tested positive for dengue. The GP quickly prepared the guarantee letter for him to be admitted at KPJ Hospital. I was at work when Abe informed me of his development. Next thing I knew, I was on the way to the hospital.

The moment he was in the ward, the nurses started him on the drip and got series of tests done. Tubes of his blood samples were quickly sent to the lab for more conclusive diagnosis.

Hero # 1 was down and Mommy still in denial.

Hero #2

Abe was supposed to be away on work assignment. That morning before I left for work, I saw him packing his suitcase. His movements were slow and he didn't look like he was at all excited to leave for Curryland. I thought it was because of my last minute tag-along-cancellation that got him upset; leaving him with little motivation to proceed with the trip (perghhhhh....perasan kann!!) Well, if only some (incompetent) people didn't mess up with the travel itinerary.......

Anyway, it's all history now. Close book. Fated. Tak de rezeki nak ke Bollywood again.

And nak jadi cerita lagi, he too fell ill. His headaches and sore joints became worst. Topped by chess pains lagi! And all these got him going to the clinic. Just hours before his departure, the GP asked to stay put and declared that he was not fit to travel. Doctor prescribed some medications and asked him to continue resting at home. This was quite a blow for him. First time in his nearing 30 years service with the power company, he experienced such an adverse misfortune.

Two days later came the second whammy. His blood test confirmed the cause of his aches and pains. Positive dengue jugak!

Abe checked-in to the same hospital; just two rooms down the corridor from where Faris was.

Hero # 2 was defeated and Mommy turned into Nurse Florence.

Mommy as Nurse Florence had to put a brave front. Couldn't possibly show the two heroes how worried she was. Close family members and friends on FB helped calm the squirms in my stomach. And this “not-giving-up-nurse” dutiful prepared soup ketam, rebus bayam, starfruit shake, 100 plus - the popular food for remedy suggestions received from friends near and far for her patients.

My office was very understanding on my situation. I was away for three days and during those days I was either hanging out in the hospital or preparing food for the duo. On a few occasions I had to run to the pharmacies, hunting for some ointment or cream to help ease the patients' pain. It was nerve wrecking tiring!

Looking back how, Alhamdulillah, the trying times have passed. Both heroes are recovering. Abe was first to be discharged and two days later Faris was allowed to return home. They are both making good progress and today Abe has gone back to work.

Bila ingatkan havocnya last week, macam tak terpikul di bahu. Ya Allah, itu baru sedikit ujian dari mu; your reminder to us of your innumerable blessings. Ya Allah, if compared to those with greater tests in war torn countries or plagued by droughts and famine, apa benarlah yang kami lalui ini.

I believe all these that happened is full of hikmah. Thank you God for helping us re-align our purpose and priorities. His grace upon us, as well as His eternal mercy and compassion, we should always be thankful. Our body, our health, our rezeki are all the great deal of evidence showing profound and great love of Allah. Kita adalah hamba Nya but He has such great love for us. Subahanallah.

To my love ones, this was Allah's test on us because he loves us and wants to bring us closer to him and his religion. This was His reminder for us to be better Muslims. To face tough and difficult challenges in life with faith put on Him. Some challenges may be difficult to overcome, especially when the odds are stacked against us. Go against the odds, have that "never quit" attitude in life. InshaAllah, by observing patience, remembering Him and turning only to Him for help and guidance during such times, He will be there for us.

To all friends and acquaintances yang tidak jemu-jemu memberi words of encouragement, offering their doas and prayers for the our safety and well being, from the very bottom of my heart, I wish to express my heartfelt thanks for your kindness and thoughtfulness. Thank you thank you so much for being there for us.

It's a Silver

Today marks a special US – Abe and I moment. Looking back, it's been a long and winding road getting to where we are now. There have been ups and downs, trials and obstacles that came hammering. Wasn't easy, but we managed to surpass them – maybe not all. Some are bugging us still and I hope we are strong to persevere the ruffles and ripples, InshaAllah.

It's been a wonderful and delightful 25 years. Alhamdulillah for the treasured and cherished love, the showering of rezeki, blessing and happiness.

We move on now into another new day which will add to another year and hopefully to many more to come. To Allah the most glorified, the most high, we pray for enough happiness to keep us sweet; enough trials to keep us strong; enough sorrow to keep us human; enough hope to keep us happy; enough failure to keep us humble; enough success to keep us eager; enough friends to give us comfort; enough faith and courage in ourselves, enough wealth to meet our needs; enough determination to make each day a better day than yesterday.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

Skylark Takes A Break

Actually...tak perlu cerita pun tak pe about this. But...on second thoughts, cerita pun okay gak.

Two days ago was "heart" day lah kan. Of course there was no celebrations. Did moot via BBM if kot lah teringat nak gi Giant beli Ferraro Roche or Selberan KLCC (hahhh tu diaaaa...punya lah langit dgn bumi punya request!) to grab that eye blinding solitaire. Anyway, respond via BBM macam mendatar. So be it lah...tak pe. Lagi pun just came back from holidays, so cannot and MUST not complain.

Came home from work like always - late. After dinner, Nissa wanted to bake something. I said, "Yeah...why not. We have flour, choc powder and all the ingredients to bake moist choc cuppies."

And we did just that. Got the perkakas out and started baking.

Nissa said, "Let's use the silicone baking pan. Its "heart" shaped. Would be nice to make heart shaped cakes for Daddy kan..."

Okay, we did just that. The pan was something we got on our last day in Osaka hari tu. Excited lah nak guna. Plus nak test jugak...mana lah tau kot-kot cair ke under the extreme baking heat.

Anyway, about 30mins after I put in the first batch of bakes, ready lah those cute "hearts". Nissa being Nissa, dia test dulu and bila dah kenyang, she said, "Let's give Daddy."

Mommy said, "Okay...put on a nice plate and you give to him.."

Just seconds after Nissa took the "heart" to her dad, she returned into the kitchen and said, "Dah tido Mama....". Siap dengan facial expressions macam anak Jepun tertinggal subway lagi.

Chessss....kalau tau tadi gi beli cake yang nak expire kat Angle Kek House je kan....

Okay lah...tak larat nak type panjang-panjang cerita ni.

Skylark will return after this, rest assured.

Kick Start 2012

It is down to just four of us in the house now. The two elder kids have gone back to college and with school back in session, Nissa's schedule is pack to the brim again. She's now in Year 5. My oh my....my little baby no more this girl. She has grown so much – bigger and already as tall as I am (but Mommy is petite (ohh yeah??), so I guess this does not make a good height comparison). When we went to buy her school stuffs late last year, it shocked me seeing the size of her school uniform. Even more shocking was her school shoes - those size 8 looked so gigantic on her feet.

We also have a maid now. After those many months of slogging and struggling with the house chores, Alhamdulillah, it was God sent when this Bibik came to us. It's kinda a long story how Bibik ended up at our place. Nonetheless, I am glad that there is someone helping out in that department. I am so relieved that someone will be home waiting for Nissa and ensuring she takes her lunch properly after school.

Bibik being new into our household, has quite a bit of catching up. I wouldn't say she's at par with my super duper Bibik Ton, but so far things are pretty much under control and the house is back to normal. Laundry is cleared daily and there are no more clothes bundled in the basket waiting to be ironed. The lawn is nicely swept and my work clothes are neatly pressed every morning.

I almost forgot how good it felt being the Ma'am again. Just like the other maids we've had, I am keeping my fingers crossed, and hoping that this one will work out for us. If in the last 8 months, I have been going against the odds shouting out of frustration that we don't need a maid in the house, ohhhh now...I hate to gulp the truth that in actual fact YES WE DO!!

Sad....but true......and left with no choice I am.

Undisturbed and Unmoved

Hello everyone!! We are back from the town famous with gorgeous townsfolk on the grey coast of Siam, where the Andaman Sea spreads beyond your eyes.

Krabi - what a stunning vacation it was. Undisturbed and unmoved; only filled with natural glory of white sandy beaches, coral reefs, mesmerizing islands, and forests with caves and waterfalls.

More stories soon.... :))

Not forgetting.....

Wishing all a Merry Christmas and may this festival bring abundant joy and happiness!

Vacation Time

Greetings....from a Johor Baru :))

It's a rather wet day here down south. Both Nissa and I are on a short break in JB. Drove down from Shah Alam on Friday and it's our second day here today.

We did Universal Studios Singapore yesterday. It being a Saturday, the park was packed with visitors. It took us quite a long time to get to our rides; the new Transformers 3D ride was the longest. Nonetheless kids (ohhh I'm here with my sister and her kids too) were extremely excited.

Well, gotta go now. Going into the island again in a while. Today's program is Mommy's agenda - Orchard Road (grin ear to ear..)

Hope to post more Singapore stories in next posting :))

Have a good weekend folks :))

The Call

speaking out
words are cold
turning away
desperate lone lingers

mulling over
wicked memories muster
thinking through
hard logic defies

giving up
heart bleeds sorrow
opting out
sanity regains

Could this be the choice
Must call my shots soon....

Kids@Raya

Kids are the happiest at Raya - always. They get to meet up, play, sleep, eat together and the occasional sibling fights don't bother them much. Year in year out, I'm glad we still have the youngins running around, bemusing us at Raya. But this won't be long till they catch up with gadgets whatnots and soon forget about their creative play.

Kidnapping in progress - "guns" included

Kidnappers on the loose

Emergency call....ambulance drivers and "doctors" on call

The duo whose ambitions are scientist and egyptologist - treating the poor boy who was down with measles.

Duhh....this must have been a real crisis....

Let's see what happens when we dress up lil cousin....

Oopsss...wardrobe failure!!

The imaginative stock market....buy, buy, buy!!

Lipton ice tea advert...take 21!

Roll the camera.....

We are tired...let's see if the iPad allows us to order pizza

"Don't I simply love raya??" must be on his mind

I love you bro so let me help u with your baju....

To the Caves

Our guide Lynn suggested that we visit one very famous cave in Guilin. According to her the rock pillars and rock formations have existed for hundreds of years. Like most tourist sites in Guilin, to enter one must purchase tickets. We paid about CNY90 per ticket to enter the caves.

The Reed Flute Cave is a brilliant cave which got its name from the verdant reeds growing outside it, with which people make flutes.

Inside this water-eroded cave is a spectacular world of various stalactites, stone pillars and rock formations created by carbonate deposition.

These caves were discovered by a farmer. His reward was only 1yuan.

It is a Chinese habit to give each formation a legendary or poetic name such as Crystal Palace, Dragon Pagoda, Virgin Forest, Flower and Fruit Mountain and other interesting names.

For some of these names, one has to use much imagination, to visualize the formations.

Lynn said this formation looks like the chandelier. Emmmmppppp.....entah larrr......

Can you spot a face in the rock formation?

Some 70 inscriptions on the cave wall are said to be travelogues and poems derived from the Tang Dynasty

Both the stories and the lighting add mystery to the scene. This one for example is known as the snow castle. Reflections of the rock formations on the water was really, really a beauty!!
